Safety Concerns

Although Los Angeles is generally safe for tourists, there has been a significant increase in violent crime rates over the past few years, compounded by the increase in the Homeless population and COVID Pandemic.

Safety Precautions you can take to ensure your Trip will be enjoyable:

  • Avoid walking alone at night
  • Avoid areas with higher crime rates
  • Avoid giving money directly to homeless individuals, as it is not a sustainable solution.
Instead, consider supporting local organizations that work directly with the homeless community.
  • Take a Common-Sense approach and be aware of your surroundings

Where to Stay?

The best areas for tourists include Hollywood and Santa Monica, and if you want a much more relaxed LA experience (and care more about surfing than the tourist areas) you could consider an area like Manhattan Beach.

  • Hostels: There are many great options for affordable hostels, either with shared or private rooms. Hostelworld is a great resource to find and book beds. This is the best value option and ideal for solo travelers. The most highly recommended hostels are the HI Los Angeles Hostel and the Orange Drive Hostel
  • There are many great Airbnb offerings, and this option may be the best value for families or groups.
  • Hotels are a good option for families, or people mainly looking to relax. There are many many options, some extremely close to the Waterfront, others with Rooftop Bars or Pools!
